Broadstairs MOT Centre supports the IAAF as it calls on the Government to set the minimum MOT fee at £54.85.
Rising costs across the automotive industry for tooling, training and technology requires a realistic review of the MOT fee which has remained unchanged for 14 years, says Director Simon Hooper.
“As a country we undervalue the importance of MOT test stations and the compliance they adhere to and training of testers. To carry out an MOT takes approx. one hour and the current fee is almost half the price of our labour rate. The number of test stations has reduced, and there is a decline in the number of technicians qualifying as MOT testers which means less choice for consumers and ultimately longer booking times. Where there are garages offering MOTs for £25 it undermines the importance of the MOT and its purposes to keep road users and pedestrians safe.
“I don’t think there is any other industry which has not had a price change in 14 years. As a country we are failing to inspire young people into the industry and have an ageing workforce. The advancements in automotive technology means constant training, investment in tooling and software and technology in order to communicate with vehicles and read reports. As the only SERMI accredited garage in Thanet, we are proud of our technicians and the service and skillset we offer. However, the low price MOT and the industry being unlicensed has led to consumer apathy and a disregard for the importance of why vehicles are required to have an MOT each year. We support the IAAF and would like to Government to consider not only ensuring a minimum test fee, but to also increase the MOT fee to a more realistic amount to reflect the increase in costs.”
