FAQs and Further Information

Four Wheel Alignment Broadstairs Thanet

Why do I need a four-wheel alignment check?

A: To ensure you are getting maximum fuel economy, to improve tyre life, safer driving and braking and to improve handling.

What difference does this make?

A: When your wheels are out of alignment, they are not pointed in the optimal directions for the best handling, braking, and performance. This misalignment can also affect tyre wear, suspension component life and even fuel economy.

Fuel Economy benefits

A: If your vehicle is out of alignment, you are creating more resistance and ‘drag’ against the road, which in turn creates more rolling resistance and requires more power to overcome this resistance.

This can improve your fuel mileage by up to 10%. That may not seem like a lot but it can add up quickly, especially if you drive a lot.

How can this affect my braking?

A: If the alignment is ‘out’, the vehicle could steer to one side whilst braking. Properly aligned wheels can improve your car’s braking performance. This means that you’ll be able to stop your car more quickly in an emergency situation.

How does poor alignment affect vehicle performance?

An important benefit of wheel alignment is improved handling. Properly aligned wheels will make your car handle better on the road, especially when you’re driving at high speeds.

If your wheels are out of alignment, you’ll notice that it pulls to one side of the road. This can be extremely dangerous, especially if you are driving on motorways.

When your wheels are properly aligned, your car will stop in a straight line rather than veer to one side or the other.

Will this help keep my tyres in good condition?

A: Wheel alignment can increase the lifespan of your tyres. When your car’s wheels are out of alignment, your tyres will wear down unevenly on the inner or outer tyre edge. This is often noted on MOTs and Servicing. We therefore recommend a four-wheel alignment check and adjustment.

If the alignment is out, then tyres can develop bald spots or wear down completely. Replacing tyres is expensive, so it’s important to do everything you can to extend their lifespan. This is particularly important with EV tyres – due to the weight of the vehicle and extra torque.

How will I know that the alignment is out?

A: If your car is making strange noises when you are driving, it could be a sign that your wheels are out of alignment. When your wheels are properly aligned, they rotate smoothly along the road surface, but when they are out of alignment, they can create a “thumping” noise that’s hard to ignore.

If you hear a strange noise coming from your car, it’s a good idea to have it checked out by a professional. They can determine if your wheels are the source of the noise and if so, they can realign them to reduce the noise.

What about tyres on Electric Vehicles?

Four Wheel Alignment Broadstairs Thanet

Electric cars are heavier and wear tyres quicker. To preserve your investment in the tyre, it is important to ensure the alignment is correct, so you are not prematurely replacing the tyre due to uneven wear.

Wheel alignment checks can be carried out during a service or booked independently. We advise this should be done annually, due to poor road surfaces and potholes.
